Day 33: Day 2 in Auckland, New Zealand

Thursday, February 7th, 2013

Jonathan was not disembarking today to give his Staff Captain his turn.  Barry had some errands to do and so Karen and I were on the loose to shop.  Now we already have a previous world cruise under our belt, having shopped the world last year.  We are also pretty similar in how fast we shop.  What we both figured out pretty quickly was that a lot of the cheap and cheerful hot weather clothing we bought last year in India, and Hong Kong, was also falling apart.  We hit the mother lode this day, in one little store where we both found some great summer clothes that were cheap and cheerful, but better quality.

I am telling you this, because overall, the price of goods in New Zealand is very high.  The currency exchange is $1 US to $1.20 NZ.  Even so it must be difficult to live here.   The city of Auckland is really very liveable otherwise.  It is a great walking city, with lots of hills - similar to San Francisco, although not quite as steep.  We just ambled along in the sunshine, had a great little Japanese lunch and headed back to the ship for sail away.

Unfortunately we were delayed leaving as some mechanical parts hadn't made it aboard quite in time, so we were at our dinner when we sailed out of this stunning harbour city.
