Day 70: At Sea

Saturday March 16th, 2013

We were up early again and as planned, Barry went to Tai Chi, while I reported to the Lower Promenade for my daily job: blog reporter.  I have vowed to stay on top of this, so that it didn't become overwhelming when we have multiple days in port.

The sea is calm still, and the heat on deck is great, even at 8 am.   Dr Robert Schrirer joined our ship as a guest lecturer and he has everyone spellbound.  He has been speaking on Tyrants in the World : first how they come to power , and today how they fail, and what the future is for more of them.  He lectures at Princeton, consults to the U.S. government, major corporations, and United Nation organizations, as well as other countries.  He is originally from South Africa.  The Queen's Lounge is filled to capacity when he speaks, because he has the ability to take complex subjects and reduce them to simple but profound points.  I am going to find out if he has written any books or if his lectures are online, once we return home.

The evening entertainment was the same funny comedian Jonathan Lawrence and the brilliant pianist Van-Anh Nguyen.  Tonight this beautiful young woman came out on stage  wrapped in a confection of  a huge organza bow, which was designed by an Australian who was greatly influenced by Japanese designers.  She told me that he pinned it on her body as he was designing it.  We bought her CD. Barry says that her playing is close to perfection.

I will post one funny picture from a few ports ago, which we forgot to post.  On our first evening in Hong Kong, when we gathered out on the stern in the evening, the doctor on board joined us.  He is a very funny guy, and he plays the harmonica.  He wanted to demonstrate that you don't have to play this instrument with your mouth and proceeded to play it with his nose.  He had us all laughing hysterically.  I must add that when I was so sick in January he was so skilled and so professional, but he obviously has this very comical side to him.
